Steps to Becoming a Firefighter

Self-sponsored students (those students not already working as paid employees of a fire department) become certified Alabama Fire Fighters by attending Fire Fighter I/II (recruit school) at the Alabama Fire College in Tuscaloosa or attending an AFC Regional Recruit School at an approved Regional Training Center and passing all skills tests as well as the Alabama State Fire Fighter Certification exam given at the end of recruit school.

Step 1
Fire Fighter I/II students must meet these requirements (view here) before applying for admission to recruit school.
Fire Fighter Bridge students must meet these requirements (view here) before applying for admission to Bridge recruit school.
Step 2
Submit your completed Firefighter I/II Recruit School application (download here). You may also obtain a copy of the application from the Student Services office at the Alabama Fire College.

All paperwork and tuition are due at the time of registration.

Step 3
Attend the mandatory orientation day (this is usually 1 month prior to the start date of the school). You will receive a letter/email to inform you of the date. PLEASE NOTE: This is mandatory; failure to attend could result in losing your place in the class.

Step 4
Before coming to class, you must complete the required Medical training. You must have proof of one of the following:
  • Emergency Medical Responder training
  • Emergency Care Provider training
  • A current valid EMT license
  • Proof of successful EMT training
You can register for an Emergency Care Provider class. It will be offered during the week prior to the start of recruit school.
